Most Typical Stolen Items in Residential Burglaries

Most burglaries around the world are committed by drug addicts desperate to support their habit. The goods they steal are sold quickly, sometimes within an hour of the burglary! The crook gets about 10 cents a dollar most of the time. Because of these facts, it is necessary for a burglar to break into several homes every day to support his drug habit.

Once the burglar has succeeded in entering a home, he does not want to stay there long.  Most of the burglars try to grab small items that will fetch them money easily and quickly.  The typical things a burglar goes for are jewelry, small sized electronics, credit cards, check books, cash/coins, video games and guns.

However, larger items are not safe either.  High-end television sets get taken right off the wall.  Sometimes, a pillow case will be missing because it is used for storing and carrying the stolen items. The burglar then quickly leaves your home and converts the stolen goods into cash, which he does at different venues.

Another item popular with burglars is the piggy bank or jar which most people keep in the house for keeping small change, and very often these are full and quite heavy, and it is money can easily convert and use.

The homeowner’s main concern should be to make their homes as difficult to get into as possible. A burglar’s two biggest worries are detection and the time spent in the house.  If you can create the measures that increase these two factors, the burglars will probably be very reluctant to try to break into your house for fear of being caught.

You have to always take the following simple steps:

Always lock your windows and doors when you go away.  It is surprising how many people do not lock their doors when they leave their houses.  It is a good idea to keep shrubs and trees trimmed, so that others can see people walking around your house. You will be giving up a bit of privacy, but this could protect you from the pain of being the victim of a burglar.

As more and more people are doing these days, you may wish to invest in an alarm system.  If you do have a system installed, also have an external speaker; if activated, the speaker will alert your neighbors or passersby about what is going on, even before the police are alerted; in that way, your neighbors can be your best defense.  Talk to your neighbors and request them to keep an extra close eye on your home during the time you are away.
