Are You A Target For Burglary?
In winter, as the clocks turn back and the nights grow longer, homes and gardens need an extra bit of attention to make them remain secure from unwelcome intrusions.
Home insurance providers have found that theft-claims usually increase with the longer hours of darkness; most thieves, needless to say, prefer to operate at night. Therefore, property owners are cautioned to take extra steps to make sure that their valuables are kept safe and to do everything to keep thieves away.
In the matter of home burglaries, prevention is much more preferable to cure. There are, indeed, certain simple steps that you should take, to limit the chances of a burglary.
As a first step, make sure that all your valuables are kept out of sight. Most burglars are in the habit of checking out the properties they target before they act, by looking in through windows – so keep all the curtains firmly closed and put away all the valuables where they cannot be seen easily.
You have to be careful with disposing your rubbish, too, especially with the approach of Christmas. Thieves try to spot boxes which had previously contained expensive items; the boxes may be trash now, but they indicate to the thieves that there are expensive goods inside the house worth picking; so don’t throw the boxes by the road-side until it is the day for your refuse collection.
Criminals sometimes pose as callers, so do be wary of bogus callers. Checking their photo id’s alone is not sufficient protection against sophisticated crooks; so call up the company the caller is claiming to represent, to verify their real identity. If the calling person is legitimate, he will not mind your doing so and waiting.
While enhancing the security of your home by installing home security systems is a great way to lessen the chance of burglaries, by doing so you will also earn yourself added bonus; it could help you save money on your insurance premiums too. Most of the insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who install CCTV cameras, burglar alarms, window locks and time switch lights. You can consult your insurer and find out which devices offer the largest savings, before buying them.
Do make sure that you have a good home insurance policy to ensure adequate compensation if a break-in does occur. There are cheap home insurance policies that offer top quality cover. Some insurers even increase their coverage at Christmas time to provide added value to homes.
